I have same issue - been told its a software issue so hoping it'll get fixed when in garage next week. Reset whole MMI earlier today but within 5 mins of driving had the dreaded message again!!. Its an irritant only as cit seems the telephone line still works if needed but as many have said shouldn't happen on a ÂŁ40k car!!

Why should the owners be the testing regime? I have seen these types of problems before having had over 45 years in the technical computer industry. Testing, testing and more testing by Audi before the software is released is the order of the day.

Same ('partial failure') issue here. My dealer (Cambridge) also says that it's a faulty (?dead) back-up battery, but totally unable to source a replacement for the time being (apparently been on back-order for some time). My Q3 is well over 2 years old now and the fault only recently appeared, so I'm much more inclined to believe that it is indeed the battery rather than a software issue.

Do you know what the back-up battery does ?

Mike

Provide back-up for whatever modem the SOS unit uses? I'm guessing (totally!) that it's to protect against such a serious crash that power from the main 12v battery was lost. Presumably that might happen now and again, but surely it would need to be a pretty severe crunch?

after a couple of false starts i’m now booked in on 21st Feb for a 2nd anniversary Inspection at which time, they say, they’ll deal with the SOS warning message. More later….

This has been a fault across the VW range since mid 2020. There is not a single fix for the problem as the fault has been cleared with a number of solutions, backup battery, SIM, control unit and firmware upgrade. As cars get more complex the interaction between components gets more convoluted so solving a problem is not easy.

Interesting, thanks for your input. Doesn’t sound too hopeful, I was hoping for a quick fix….
As soon as I can get in we’ll have to compare diagnoses!
Thanks
Bob
Bob,
My car is in on the 21st Feb too, having spoken to Audi UK I am now having a temporary software patch applied which will stop the fault appearing every time at startup. I am still waiting for a replacement battery which apparently has been on order since 15th December. I hope you don't have a battery problem as they are unable to tell me when it will be replaced.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Simon

Unfortunately the software patch wasn't installed as it didn't correspond with my VIN. However, the replacement battery is now due on the 7th March, assuming it arrives the car will be booked in to be fitted. I'll let you all know when I am booked in and if it resolves the problem.

Reporting back as promised.
SOS fault light has been diagnosed as a backup battery problem. Replacement battery on order, they’ll let me know when they have one.
To be continued…..
Bob

Bob,

This is what I've been waiting for, its taken 2 months but hopefully it will be at Plymouth Audi on the 7th March. I hope you don't have to wait as long. I'll let you know if it resolves the problem

I have a 2020 TFSi Quattro and my emergency call warning popped up a couple of months back and has stayed on. Poole Audi also said it was a battery back-up issue and I’m waiting for their call to get it replaced. They said one was on back order fro Germany, but who knows. I have read that it entails a strip out of the front dash. I think they must have had a lot of practice at doing this by now as all VAG vehicles of a certain date have this issue.

Mine was intermittent, in fact so much so that I hadn't even asked for it to be fixed - the dealer (Stratford Audi up here in Warwickshire) just did it whilst it was in for other warranty work - I have no idea if it was just s/w or a battery as well. I got the feeling that MMI had been rebooted.
