It's time to try the upgrade to Audi Sound System PR-9VD. If your car has Passive Speakers PR-8RX, you must install a center speaker, a factory sub woofer which goes to the boot into the spare wheel and replace the front door speakers to other with different resistance. On Ebay, you can find all parts for about 90GBP shipped, worths the upgrade</font>

</font>Then you must enable ASS on the RMC, I did it using VAG CAN Pro cable and activated ok. Connection must be done according to the picture below:</font>

</font>Haven't finished the mod, because I'm waiting for the parts, but all is done including the wiring, so will post when finished to tell you about sound quality.</font>

That's very interesting and something to look into when my warranty expires next year.
Where is the centre speaker fitted?

Found thissound system retrofit guide. It's for an A3 and not in English but the pics give an idea of what's involved - https://www.audisport-iberica.com/foro/topic/364275-brico-upgrade-de-sonido-b%C3%A1sico-8rm-a-audi-sound-system-ass-9vd/I'd be surprised if every radio unit (there are several different part nos)has the required built-in 180W amplifier but can't find a definitive answer. Same applies to the J 532 voltage stabiliser. There are 200w and 400w versions and the sound system uses the bigger one. I checked the part nos on a VCDS scan and my car, whichis not fitted with the sound system, has the 400w version - so it could be 'standard' on most cars.Hats off to Kostas again for finding what could be a low cost and easy looking but very worthwhile upgrade.

I have installed the subwoofer and the center dash speaker finally, everything works ok, but center speaker, due to being middle range, is a bit higher than all other speakers. Maybe replacing front door speakers is a must to ensure better sound quality.
Tried to replace center speaker with a tweeter and sound is a lot better, without replacing front door speakers.

Just browsing through the above A3 retrofit guide and noticed the speakers have a different impedance depending on their location. Wonder if it's the same for the Q3

Hello Spike,

On first post I write the part numbers for ASS 9VD, front door speaker have different impedance. The difference with factory ones is the "A" at the end

Okay so I went deeper down rabbit hole and found the options numbers. They are 8AL 8RX 7A7 9WC 9ZX
Can this help us know if my RMC head unit will support the upgradation?
Thanks @spike @kostas-k

Also what is J532 voltage stabiliser?
Is the centre speaker install mandatory or can we just install Subwoofer?
Is it possible that even if my system is 200w and not 400w, it has a Subwoofer output, which I can maybe use to install my own custom self powered Subwoofer?
I still have to buy everything, cables and speakers and all, so if this helps me know possibilty I can order or maybe not order.

I've copied some info on the voltage stabiliser and radio systems. I think the J532 just feeds specific fuses which in turn supply a smooth voltage output for the specific components listed so there is no dedicated socket for a Sub.
As the factory infotainment components are linked by a MOST Bus optical system I'm not sure how non Audi hardware would work together
All the radios list the Audi sound system as an option so I'd check the on line parts catalogue to see if a specific model is needed to work with the Audi sound system option

@spike what to do you make of the option numbers I have provided. Does that give any insight into the version of RMC installed in my vehicle?
Also one unanswered part, is it necessary to have a dash speaker for the ASS?
Thanks.

Sorry, I don't know the answers but for the dash speaker would guess the system would work without it but will generate a fault code.
If you have the radio part number, a search through the parts catalogue will show if it is compatible with the ASS, and if not, which version is.
Don't know the model year of your car, or if you already know this, but here's an example - option 9VD is the Audi sound system

It seems that this unit is capable of 9VK (bose sound system) & not 9vd, that too includes a bassbox in trunk.
Any ideas if anyone has tried to activate the same & the steps?

Think the 9VK sub woofer is connected directly to the Bose amp in the boot which may be why the option notes suggest your head unit is not compatible with the 9VD sound system
