Fuel filler cap problem

The filler cap on my 3 year old Q3 failed to open 2 weeks after the warranty ended. It is going in today for a new solenoid. The mechanic suggested this was a common fault? any comments?

There have been numerous issues with fuel tank filler covers well, documented! there is a Red lever inside the boot behind the cover on the right hand side! Not sure if I have heard the fix described as a solenoid fix?

The red manual emergency pull cable will not help I am afraid as if it is the common problem it is down to the actual plastic catch not disengaging correctly no matter how the electrical system work or the amount you yank on the cable...

If you try "jiggling" the flap by tapping and gently pressing it a few times it might help the catch wake up, I had this once on my A6 and an application of plastic lube (not WD40) stopped it happening again.
There is indeed a dealer fix which is a swap over of the catch I believe, of course they might just lube it and say otherwise

If it's a solenoid issue, that would suggest a problem with the unlocking device as that moves forward or pulls back the small locking pin that engages with the filler flap. As BB says, though, you can use the red lever inside the tool stowage area.By the way, I have just tried to look at the vagfans.info Q3 parts website and it appears to be no longer available. Does anyone have an updated link?

Hi Oakley
They seem to have removed most of the on line parts web sites.

Only one I can find is vagparts and it only goes up to 2013

Just make sure Mrs Bb doesn't check your search history. I don't imagine that would end well...

For those whose 'predictive text' searches whileweb trawling is embarrasingly predictive, the correct address is- http://vagpart.com/
