I was looking to get a dash cam and quite like the idea of those OEM look ones but you have to see what mirror you have to get the right one. Anyways while looking at the mirror I noticed there is a camera there already and this looks very OEM and I can't find any info on it or how it works.

What you’re seeing is most likely the driver-assist / lane-assist camera built into the mirror housing rather than a dash cam. It won’t record like a normal dash cam, it’s only for safety systems. If you want actual video recording, you’ll still need to add an OEM-style dash cam kit or an aftermarket one that clips onto the mirror.

The lane assist camera is separate to the sensor in the mirror. If you had that you would be able to see it at the top of the windscreen. That would also give you the traffic sign recognition. Its a rare option.

I think the Audi dashcams are a bit behind what you can get aftermarket tbh. I have a blackvue front and rear with a 3G module and a seperate battery in the boot, works well and is quite unobtrusive.

Out of interest, which android screen did you order. I'd be interested to know how it interacts with the oem controls?

I order the 128gb version without the cameras.

Interested to see the secondary battery setup.

I'm interested to see how you get on with it!

I'm on my 3rd Android auto kit. The implementation of the first 2 was awful and still operated the MMI in the background, so I sold them on. They were ebay purchases anyway.

I have the IA kit now which is good but not perfect. If you could get a touchscreen overlay, then it would be the finished article. Not that i'm a fan of touchscreens, but thats what android auto/carplay is based around.

The Blackvue battery is tucked away in the boot behind the access panel. It takes around 40 mins to fully charge from flat and lasts around 12 hours for my setup (4K front/ FHD rear).

Be interesting to see this Ai kit, I have an old Android in the B7 RS which will need a upgrade soon and had another in the Fiesta I just sold but there a little like phones, you need to keep upgrading them to keep them up to date.

Post some pics of the battery setup and install, quite like the idea of that. Can't help but upgrade things or improve them.

Speakers are on the list as I didn't get Bose in my car but for what I paid it was a small price to pay.

Front camera up behind the rear view mirror, rear camera tight up to the trim and the battery down behind the passenger side boot panel.

I also have the 3G module up inside the headlining. It says to stick it to the window but I prefer it hidden and it works just fine there.

All the cables are hidden and you can feed the rear camera cable through the existing tailgate connection.

Nah it was an optional add on.

The Blackvue can be wired direct to the car with a switched and permanent live to give parking mode. You can then set it to turn off when the car battery drops below a certain level. Having the optional blackvue battery means your not constantly taking juice out of the car battery.
