Haldex Fault

Making a sharp exit from a wet junction a couple of weeks ago had the front wheels scrabbling for grip. Thought nothing of it until I did an unrelatedVDS scan yesterday which flagged up fault code 00448 - Haldex clutch pump open circuit.Googled the night away and decided a new pump, filter and oil change would be needed at a cost of ÂŁ270 + just for the parts.Luckily, before I ordered the bits I found this post on the Skoda forum - https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/384716-haldex-pump-fault-0448-and-a-fix-also-changing-the-haldex-clutch-oil/Drained the Haldex oil, removed the pump ( cable is just long enough to do this without disconnecting it) and found the pump filter screen gummed up - just like the pic.Removed the screen (T10 torx) and gave it a scrub with a toothbrush and carb cleaner, put the pump back and RESULT - I've got 4WD again and no fault codes. Just hope it's a permanent fix.Other thing I found is the Haldex has a main filter but Audi don't recognise this as a service item. Not sure if the 'jell' on the pump is related butI'll be changing the filter and oil in the next week or twoNot tried them yet but will be buying the oil and filter here - http://haldexrepairs.co.uk/

Cheers SpikePS. This fix applied to the Series 4 Haldex fitted to Q3s up toNov2013. Mine was serviced on timeby Audi (new oil butthey don't do the filter)and the pump filter screen still blocked after 4 1/2 years / 50k milesSeries 5 Haldex units are significantly different and may not have the replaceable main filter. They are howeverlikely to have amesh filter screen on the pump which could have similar blockage problems.

Thanks for that spike. If there's a filter then I wonder why Audi don't replace/service it as part of the Haldex oil change service....

It's a couple of weeks since I fixed the Haldex fault and so far so good. Happy that cleaning the pump filter screen is a permanent fix I decided to change the oil and filter.Latest spec oil is G060 175 A2, which I bought from a VW dealer on ebay for ÂŁ39. The Haldex filter was ÂŁ50 for the full kit which included the nylon space with O.ring seals, alloy cap and bolts. The old filter is removed before draining the oil, as after removing the alloy cap,the element is extracted simply by running the engine at highish revs for a few seconds (in 'Park') so the oil pressure in the Haldex unit pushes it out. (thanks youtube) Only a small amount ofoil spills out in the process.Next, fully drain the unit and refill. This needed asecond top-up after temporarily fitting the fill plug and running the engine for a minute or two.As a precautionary step I also removed the Haldex pump to check the filter screen and found it had not been re-contaminated. NOTE the pump body is stepped and uses two different size O.rings.

Hi spike, your post made me look at the receipts for my haldex oil change. The dealer just replaced the oil and not the filter and my car is a late 2014 model. The service book also states that its an oil change, not filter and it is to be done every 3 years.

My dealer tried (or told me it was due!) to sell me an oil change when I took my vehicle in for its first service at 18K, on the service heath check paperwork it says Transmission Oil Change due between 20,000 to 36,000 miles, not sure if that includes the Haldex or not but they were trying it on roughly 15K early!
No specific mention of the Haldex change though.

My local dealer - about which it is often said.... - recommended an S-Tronic oil change at or by 40,000 miles and a Haldex oil change at the same time. I'll certainly do that - but not necessarily with them.

My Audi Service Shedule book says that a s-tronic oil change should be done at 60k Km/38K miles (page 11 Changing oil and replacing oil filter in s-tronic gearox) and the haldex oil change should be done every 3 years (page 11, Changing oil in Haldex coupling). The Haldex oil change at the dealer wasnt expensive but the s-tronic oil/filter change was. Asked my local indie for a quote for the stronic oil/filter change and it was only ÂŁ30 cheaper. The bulk of the cost is the stronic gearbox oil which is quite scary.

I was told that there should be an S-Tronic oil change at 20k miles when I picked the car up. I'll be asking for the Haldex oil to be done at the same time. A lot cheaper than a potential problem down the road.

I'd check your service schedule booklet aldfort as my service book said 38K for the stronic oil change. Salesdroids dont know any better and 20K for stronic oil change sounds low and it isnt cheap. Haldex was more a more reasonable cost and is done every 3 years.

I seem to have lost 4 wheel drive as I am getting wheel spin from the front wheels. The Haldex oil was changed a year ago and also a new transfer box was fitted during the warranty period if that is relevant.

Is it likely the problem is down to the Haldex filter on my 2013 Q3 with only 27000 warranted miles on the clock?

As the heldex is an electrically controlled clutch it could be down to other issues such as a bad electrical connection or a fault with the braking ABS system, which wouldn’t allow the clutch to engage

Did a routine diagnostic scan the other day and the Haldex 00448 fault code re-appeared. Weird thing was the mileage showed as 3618101 km while the car has only done approx. 88000 km (converted from miles)
Luckily a Google search showed this horrendously high and unrelated exact mileage showed up on several posts about Haldex pump failures. To confirm the pump had actually failed I checked the resistance and it was 198 ohms against a spec of 5 - 8 ohms.
One new pump, oil and filter plus a few hours kneeling in the pit and the problem is sorted.

Now the bad news. there is no easy way to remove the pump without cutting the lead to the Haldex controller. Once I'd finished fitting the new unit I decided to remove the old motor cover. The brushes were quite worn and receding well into their guide slots but the braided brush leads seemed to be snagging on the outer edge of the slots and limiting brush movement. I re-adjusted both so the brushes could move freely and surprise surprise, the motor resistance value dropped to 5 ohms.
The cover is easy to remove 'in situ' so it could be a quick fix and extend the pump life for a year or two at minimum cost.

Found a repair kit on ebay so they can be replaced but its not a nut and bolt job. Have not looked in detail but suspect the braided leads are 'spot welded' in place. I'd not trust a soldered joint so it may not be a DIY fix.

HALDEX OIL SPEC

While sorting out my Haldex pump problem I found that in most cases the recommended oil for Gen4 systems was VAG spec G.055.175.A2 which costs about ÂŁ28 for a litre.
Before buying I checked the parts book which quotes a later spec G.060.175.A2 - which is around ÂŁ40 for 850ml on ebay from a VW/Audi dealer. (that's what I used)
Can't find any background info on the spec change or why some of the Haldex specialists still 'push' the older spec oil

For reference this is where I bought the filter from - https://www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/ Can't fault the service

I think you wanted to write G.055.175.A2 instead of G.060.175.A2 :tango_face_wink:

If I remember correct, dealer gave me G.060.175.A2 when replaced haldex oil

Hi Pete

My filter kit from Haldex Repairs did not include the oil - which I think would have been an extra ÂŁ28 or so.
You got a bargain.
When you change the oil and filter are you going to remove the pump and check the mesh filter screen ?

Cheers Spike

Hi Spike,

Yes, I'm going to do the mesh filter screen too. Appreciate you alerting me to this. Not sure when I'll get round to actually doing the job but will aim to be within the next three weeks. I've not got any ramps yet.

Cheers,

Pete

Where exactly is the filter? When my Haldex pump was replaced at an Audi dealership I specifically asked if any filters in the vicinity, or near vicinity, could be changed. I was advised there were no filters so assumed they were in the new pump assembly. is this correct?

#23 ·
It depends on the model year of your car. The series 4 Haldex was used up to Nov 2013 and has a filter. The Series5 Haldex used from that date does not. Both however still have a mesh filter screen which is part of the pump assembly as you suspected.
Even though the Series 4 Haldex has a replaceable filter element it's not shown in the parts book or listed in the service schedule. I don't think the pump filter screen is mentioned either
