I always felt that the cup holder looked ugly, felt cheap and was a dust trap so I’ve made a solution.

Obviously it doesn’t retract / slide but lifts out as needed. I bought some anthracite matt acrylic of ebay, made a cardboard template. cut acrylic to size and filed edges to match the contour. Drilled a hole to aid removal which also serves as a hole for phone charge cable to enter. Finished hole with a grommet.
It was a gamble to know if the plastic would match other plastics but it was cheap enough to bin if wrong. As it happened it was a pretty perfect match and looks fairly OEM.

Neat job.

I keep my glasses in one cup hole and the one with the lid is for old car park tickets etc. so need it open anyway.

I looked at ways to "improve" the cup holder tray area and in the end settled for using the Audi ashtray {£12 via ebay} in the front hole and like DavidS my glasses case in the other. The Audi ash tray makes for a very useful dustbin for used parking tickets, sweet wrappers,
