Hello Everyone,

Unfortunately, my MMI unit stopped working randomly one night and I am unable to turn it back on.

I used the Carista Dongle which shows that there is an Optical Databus fault.

I removed the MMI unit and checked the optical loop connection. There is a red light which indicates to me that the Optical Loop system is working but for some reason it is still not powering up? I do have an aftermarket CarPlay kit which piggybacks off the MMI and is receiving power but the MMI unit itself is not?

I have checked all the fuses under the drivers side storage compartment and all seems well.

The car is only 6 years old. I am hoping I do not have to replace the entire MMI unit as I have heard it can be extremely pricey.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Brandon

Hi Brandon, someone more technically able will be along shortly to advise. There is a known issue where the ribbon cable between the dash screen and the car fractures with the result being a black screen/dead unit.

Hi John,

I shall check the ribbon cable in a bit and see if it has broken. Is it a common issue?

Thanks,
Brandon

It is a mercifully rare issue but is the 1st thing to check when you have a dead system - I have had to wean my wife off folding the screen on her A1 for the same reason, its only a matter of time - no different than a laptop in that regard.

Hi John,

I have checked my screen and have noticed that it doesn’t have a ribbon cable?

I suppose it is because I have the older RMC system and not an MMI 3G system.

I could not find anything wrong with the connections so I have booked myself in with an Audi Specialist who will run some diagnostics with VCDS.

Fingers crossed it isn’t a dead MMI unit 😭.

Thanks for your suggestions though.

Kind regards,
Brandon

Hi Guys,

Just an update. The head unit is now back up and running.

Removing and reinserting the quad lock connections have seem to reset the MMI so now it is all working again.

Hope this helps someone with a similar issue.

Thanks,

Brandon
