Audi analyzes the desires of young IT experts

  • Company survey focuses on sought-after young talent
  • Little interest in traditional career paths
  • Findings for transformation of Audi into a premium digital car company

They are more interested in flexible working times than in a traditional career path: In a large-scale survey on “Generation Z” and “Generation Y,” Audi investigated what young IT experts would like an employer to offer. With the development of piloted driving, digital services and the smart factory of the future, the Ingolstadt-based automobile manufacturer is increasingly supported by these sought-after specialists.

“The transformation of Audi into a premium digital car company is also changing the way we work,” stated Joachim Kraege, Head of Organization and Consulting at AUDI AG. “In addition to graduates in engineering and business management, IT experts are increasingly influencing our corporate culture. This is why we have now for the first time analyzed in detail what drives and interests young specialists in this field and what they would like Audi to offer as an employer.”

For this survey, Audi polled almost 5,000 members of “Generation Z” (born in or after 1995) and “Generation Y” (1980 to 1994). The company mainly surveyed its own employees, trainees, bachelors and masters students, persons on dual courses of study, and interns. Responses from almost 900 external students were also included in the study. In a separate evaluation, a comparison was made of the information received from students and graduates in IT, engineering and business management.

The results show that far fewer young IT experts than engineering and business-management graduates plan to pursue a career in management. While 41 percent of the surveyed business-management specialists and 39 percent of the engineers look forward to a traditional management career with the associated responsibility, the proportion for informatics students and graduates is only 32 percent.

However, the desire for highly flexible working models is particularly strong among the Generation Y and Z IT experts. Unlike the other groups, they place much less importance on clearly separating their working and private lives. 43 percent of the surveyed IT specialists would like to have completely flexible working times, including evenings and weekends for example. This is attractive for only 29 percent of the business management specialists and 30 percent of the engineers.

This survey will help Audi with the further development of its working models and the results will be used in various future projects of the Human Resources department. In many areas, the changes desired by the young IT experts are already underway. With regard to mobile working for example, the company has offered its employees the possibility to work independently of location and time of day since 2016. Mobile work is possible in different places, both for full days or several hours at a time.

Audi also offers its young talent exciting career prospects beyond the traditional path into management. For example, employees can enter management along a specialist path without having leadership responsibility. Audi recently revised its personnel selection and development for management together with the VW Group, so employees now have more individual responsibility. The focus is not only on the working context, but also on the candidates’ varied activities and the personal development.

Audi continues to seek experts for its future fields of digitization and electric mobility. Students can get to know the company through internships and dissertation placements, and many entry programs are available to university graduates. First customers take over new Audi R8 LMS GT4

  • Twelve race cars for four continents
  • GT4 third pillar in Audi Sport customer racing program

Audi Sport customer racing has acquired the first customers for the Audi R8 LMS GT4. The racers from America, Australia, China and Europe took over the first twelve sports cars of the most recent model range in Neuburg an der Donau. The Audi R8 LMS GT4 is Audi Sport customer racing’s third model.

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport GmbH, and Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing, personally welcomed the customers at Audi’s Neuburg location. Five race cars went to customers from the USA and two each to customers from Asia, to Team Bourguignon from the Netherlands, to Phoenix Racing from Germany and one to an Australian customer.

“A new project always symbolizes new beginnings. The first deliveries mark a special moment for our customers as well as for us. We wish the teams the best of success with the new Audi R8 LMS GT4,” says Chris Reinke. The race car delivers up to 364 kW (495 hp) and has been directly derived from the production model. It shares 60 percent of the assemblies with its road-approved “brother,” and, like the road-going car, is built at the Böllinger Höfe site. The GT4 category in North America, Europe and Asia has become an established element as an overall classification or class in more than 15 racing series and major individual events. Additionally, from 2018 on, the new GT4 model will be fielded in the Audi R8 LMS Cup.

Audi has successfully tested the R8 LMS GT4 this year on several occasions, including the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring and in the VLN Endurance Championship. Now the first purely private racing commitments of the Audi R8 LMS GT4 are coming up when Phoenix Racing contests the Dubai 24 Hours with two cars from January 12 to 13, 2018. Two weeks later, the season of the North American IMSA series will kick off at Daytona. On the first weekend in February, customers are going to contest the Bathurst 12 Hour before the Audi R8 LMS Cup starts its seventh season in March.

In addition to the Audi R8 LMS GT3 for top-flight racing and the Audi RS 3 LMS entry-level touring car, the Audi R8 LMS GT4 is Audi Sport customer racing’s third model.

Making the Audi A8 even more dynamic:
sport exterior package and sport seats

  • Premium brand extends equipment range for its flagship model
  • Sport exterior package accentuates luxury sedan’s powerful presence
  • A first for Audi A8: sport seats with optically integrated head restraints

Sophisticated, progressive and sporty – the new Audi A8 defines the style of the entire brand. From the end of January, there will be an extended equipment range for customers who want to give more emphasis to their luxury sedan’s dynamic looks. The sport exterior package and sport seats accentuate the A8’s strong presence.

The sport exterior package features an aluminum clip below the wide, upright Singleframe grille, exclusively for the Audi A8. It helps the brand’s flagship model achieve an even more powerful visual impact. Clear contours surround the air inlets, while honeycomb grilles and a vertical strut define their inner structure. The side sills become wider as they approach the wheels – a clear reference to the Audi A8’s quattro drive as standard.

The redesigned rear bumper integrates a rhombus-grille insert and a clearly contrasting diffuser. Down the sides and at the rear, an aluminum strip echoes the design of the front splitter and serves as the body’s lower edging. Customers in Germany and other European markets can order the sport exterior package from the end of January at a price of EUR 1,950 for the Audi A8 50 TDI (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km:5.8 – 5.6*; combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 152 – 145*). Its launch also marks the introduction of the exterior color Daytona gray for the luxury sedan.

Inside the car, customers will also be able to set more accents from the end of January: In a first for the Audi A8, the new sport seats feature optically integrated head restraints which, as previously, come with electric height adjustment. The seats also adopt the technical highlights of the comfort customized contour seats complete with pneumatic seat and backrest side bolster adjustment. The latter are about 15 millimeters (0.6 in) more deeply contoured. Other advantages include the climate control and massage function, plus the comfort center armrest at the front.

There is impressive evidence of the flagship model’s exceptional quality standards in the rhombus pattern of the new sport seat with square perforations and embossed S logos towards the top of the backrest. For the upholstery, customers can choose from the top leather grades Valcona and unicum – the latter exclusively in nutmeg brown with tourmaline blue stitching. In addition to the five basic colors, Valcona leather is also available in sard brown with steel gray contrasting stitching. and in metropolis gray with tourmaline blue stitching. For a particularly elegant look, there is the new “design selection” pastel silver with contrasting stitching and piping in granite gray. The sport seats can be ordered for all engine versions and both body versions. They cost EUR 4,520.

The new Audi A8 and the A8 L (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 8.0 – 5.6*; combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 182 – 145*) are built at the Neckarsulm site and have been on sale at dealers in Europe since the end of November. The base price for the sedan with standard wheelbase is EUR 90,600, with the A8 L starting at EUR 94,100.

Audi extends trade-in bonus for switching to latest efficiency technologies

  • Initiative to replace diesel cars that meet emissions standards Euro 1 to 4
  • Amount of bonus depends on model and drive technology of the new car
  • Additional support for changing over to plug-in hybrids and g-tron models

An attractive incentive to switch to modern, more environmentally friendly cars: AUDI AG is extending its trade-in bonus for customers who switch from diesel-powered cars that meet the Euro 1 through Euro 4 emissions standards to an Audi that meets the Euro 6 standard. The price advantage is scaled by model – depending on the category of the selected new car, it amounts to between €3,000 and €10,000. The bonus is especially attractive for customers who select an Audi with an alternative drive such as plug-in hybrid technology or a g-tron model that runs on CNG (compressed natural gas). The extension to the trade-in bonus starts on January 1, 2018 in Germany and will run until March 31, 2018.

The bonuses offered by Audi are aimed at all drivers of diesel cars that comply with the Euro 1 through Euro 4 emissions standards – regardless of the model or brand. The end-of-life vehicle is taken off the road and scrapped. It does not necessarily have to be a new car as the company is also offering attractive conditions for customers who change over to a late-model used Audi. Approval of the bonus financed by AUDI AG is granted directly through the Audi dealerships without customers having to make separate applications.

Customers who decide to buy an Audi with technology facilitating especially low emissions, such as an e-tron model with plug-in hybrid drive, enjoy additional benefits. If the conditions for the German government’s “environmental bonus” are fulfilled, customers receive that bonus in addition to the Audi bonus. This also applies for Audi A3 e-tron.

For future drivers of an Audi A4 Avant g-tron* or an Audi A5 Sportback g-tron**, the trade-in bonus increases to €9,500. In gas mode and with S tronic, both models produce almost a fifth less CO2 than a gasoline-powered car. This figure is increased further with the green fuel Audi e‑gas; the Audi g-tron models thus produce 80 percent less CO2 than a gasoline-powered car in the same performance class. ***

Audi customer service will gladly answer any queries on the conditions of the environmental trade-in bonus (E-mail: kundenbetreuung@audi.de).

2018 Audi Q5 and Q7 earn 5-Star Safety Rating from NHTSA following New Car Assessment Program testing

  • 2018 Audi Q5 received double safety honors in 2017, making it the most awarded Audi SUV of the year
  • 5-Star Safety Rating program evaluates how vehicles perform in crash tests, with 5 stars as the highest rating a vehicle can earn
  • NHTSA assessment includes frontal, side and rollover testing to account for the majority of crashes on U.S. roads

HERNDON, Virginia, December 19, 2017 – The 2018 Audi
Q5 and Audi Q7 have been awarded 5-Star Safety Ratings – the highest possible ratings – from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

To achieve a 5-Star Safety Rating, both the Q5 and Q7 were tested under NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program. The overall score is based on frontal and side crash tests, as well as an evaluation of rollover resistance. Vehicles with a rating of five stars indicate the highest safety rating.

“Having the Q5 and Q7 earn the highest safety rating from NHTSA shows our commitment to make overall crashworthiness and superior driver assistance systems a top priority for our customers,” said Scott Keogh, president, Audi of America.

The 2018 Q5 and Q7 feature driver assistance systems designed to help drivers navigate the road and traffic with increased ease and peace of mind. Standard Audi pre sense® basic can help prepare the vehicle for impact in the case of an impending collision by closing the side windows and panoramic sunroof and pretensioning the front safety belts. Additionally, standard Audi pre sense city helps detects stationary vehicles and pedestrians, and at speeds of up to 52 mph, can initiate full braking when a potential collision is detected. Available Audi pre sense rear helps monitor traffic following the vehicle and takes similar actions to Audi pre sense basic while available Audi side assist provides blind spot monitoring with LED indicators on the exterior mirror housing.

With the NHTSA 5-Star-Rating, the Q5 is the most awarded Audi SUV of the year. The Audi Q5 was named a 2017 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick, and earned a “superior” rating for front crash prevention when equipped with the available driver assistance package and standard front crash prevention system. In addition, the Q5 was awarded the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy award among all SUVs and Crossovers, the Kelley Blue Book Best Auto Tech Award for luxury brands and The Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) Best SUV award.

The 2017, the Audi Q7 was also named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, earning “good” ratings in all five crashworthiness evaluations. Standard Audi pre sense® front that provides forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking earned the Q7 a “superior” rating in front crash prevention.

Audi Awarded "Most Innovative Automaker" and "Most Innovative Infotainment System" at 2018 Consumer Electronics Show

  • Audi received inaugural Edmunds CES Tech Driven Awards for leadership in innovation and tech-forward MMI® system
  • Awards honor automakers at CES that demonstrate the most forward-thinking vision and innovative technology available in 2018
  • Edmunds editors recognized Audi for its “vision, bold spirit and courage in innovation”

HERNDON, Virginia, January 11 – Audi has been awarded “Most Innovative Automaker” and “Most Innovative Infotainment System” by the Edmunds CES Tech Driven Awards at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

A first from Edmunds and the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the producer of CES, the awards were created in response to today’s rapid pace of technological innovation and development of consumer electronics. The awards recognize innovative thinking and technologies in the automotive industry.

“With a clearly defined commitment to full autonomy, Audi is a natural choice for the 2018 Edmunds CES Tech Driven Most Innovative Automaker of the Year honors,” said Alistair Weaver, Edmunds’ vice president of editorial and editor-in-chief. “In addition to its leadership position on future mobility, Audi also does an outstanding job at bringing advanced technologies into the cabin, with its MMI system being our top choice for Most Innovative Infotainment System of the Year. Both awards celebrate Audi’s forward-thinking vision and innovative culture.”

“Most Innovative Automaker”

Edmunds editors praised Audi for “pulling ahead of the pack with its strong history of innovation” including developments in automation seen in the all-new 2019 A8, the first production automobile developed specifically for SAE Level 3 automated driving. In A8 models equipped with Audi AI traffic jam pilot, and in markets where regulations permit, the vehicle can take charge of driving in slow-moving traffic at up to 60 km/h (37 mph) on freeways and highways where a physical barrier separates traffic.

Delivering advanced driver assistance and convenience systems, the 2019 A8 also debuts an intelligent approach to parking assistance with the Audi AI park pilot and the Audi AI garage pilot, which accelerate and brake the vehicle on behalf of the driver into and out of parallel or perpendicular parking spaces.

“Most Innovative Infotainment System”

Citing its “ease of use, robustness of features and distinctly contemporary luxury experience,” Edmunds editors awarded the Audi virtual cockpit and MMI® system for the vivid graphics and the overall user experience.

The MMI® system is designed to provide drivers an intuitive interface for managing navigation, entertainment, in-car experience and ride dynamics (on models equipped with Audi drive select).

Additional features include Audi smartphone interface, which allows compatible Android and IOS device content to be seen on the MMI display with a USB connection, supported by Apple CarPlay™ and Google™ Android Auto. Also, with the newly available Amazon Music integration, drivers can now access Amazon Music through their vehicle’s MMI® system via the MMI connect® mobile application.

The innovative Audi virtual cockpit transforms the way drivers interact with the vehicle through an entirely digital dashboard that renders 3D graphics with brilliant clarity. A quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor that delivers vibrant color at 60 frames per second helps enhance the infotainment viewing and navigating experience through large Google Earth™ images (requires Audi connect PRIME) supported with 4G LTE (where available).

The awards, judged by a panel of Edmunds editors, included the following criteria: testing experience, first-to-market technologies, feasibility and potential impact on the industry, usability and practicality of the technology and the overall ingenuity.

To be eligible for the 2018 Edmunds CES Tech Driven Awards, vehicles and systems must be available in 2018 and developed and brought to market by automakers represented at CES 2018.

Progressive design and innovative technology; the all-new 2019 Audi A7 makes US debut at NAIAS

  • Five-door coupe demonstrates exceptional design is also functional
  • Light animations in exterior lighting emphasize vehicle’s dynamic design
  • All-new MMI infotainment system including new touchscreen with haptic feedback

DETROIT, Michigan, January 11, 2018 – The all-new 2019 Audi A7 will make its U.S. debut at the North American International Auto Show. Building on the success of the first generation, the A7 exemplifies the prologue design language, featuring a more precise, modern exterior and interior, as well as the next generation of lighting innovations from Audi.

Amid the biggest product rollout in the brand’s U.S. history, the second-generation A7 represents design progressed, offering a more refined driving experience combined with exceptional functionality. The award-winning Sportback body style offers customers coupe-like design and performance along with the five-door layout that helps improve usability by enabling easier access to cargo space.

Exterior Design

The all-new A7 offers the best of three worlds – the spaciousness of a sedan, versatility of a Sportback and a coupe exterior design. The interior of the A7 impresses with improved space and more comfortable seating for rear passengers, with increased head room and leg room over the previous generation.

The exterior design of the A7 is an expression of the new design language that Audi introduced with the prologue study and that made its production debut in the new Audi A8. With large surfaces, sculpted lines and the signature silhouette, defined by the sloping roofline, the A7 represents progressiveness from every angle.

Lighting

The Audi A7’s lighting design solidifies Audi as a leader in lighting technology. Up front, the narrow headlights extend from the wider and lower Singleframe grille. Twelve adjacent lighting segments separated by narrow spaces mimic the binary digits 0 and 1 and represent the A7’s digital light signature. At the rear of the vehicle, a continuous light strip made up of 13 vertical segments join together the rear taillights. Fast-moving light animations play in the headlights and taillights when the vehicle is locked and unlocked, emphasizing the vehicle’s dynamics while standing still.

Interior Design

The interior of the all-new A7 fuses design and technology in a unique way. The horizontal lines and sleek instrument panel provide a feeling of spaciousness, while the center console is strongly oriented toward the driver, underscoring the vehicle’s sportiness. Light also plays an important role in the cabin. Contour lights line the center console and door trim, precisely tracing the architecture of the interior and subtly highlighting the space. The quattro badge in the instrument panel is also illuminated, further adds to the lighting theatre of the cabin.

Technology

The new Audi A7 features the same revolutionary infotainment system as was recently debuted in the A8. The all-new MMI touch response® replaces the rotary dial and the conventional buttons and controls of the previous model with two large, high-resolution touch displays. The MMI touch response operating system features haptic and acoustic feedback and is as intuitive to use as a smartphone. Users hear and feel a click as confirmation when their finger triggers a function. With its logical and flat menu structure, the system allows fast access to various vehicle functions. The system can be personalized using configurable and movable “favorites” buttons.

1,878,100 automobiles sold:
Audi closes 2017 with new record-breaking sales

  • Following a difficult start, successful year-end closing with sales up 0.6 percent
  • Sales chief Bram Schot: “Demonstrated strength and brand attraction”
  • Q models take off with over 685,000 deliveries

AUDI AG has increased its global sales for the eighth year in a row. Despite a turbulent first half of the year, the company achieved a new record-breaking figure: Around 1,878,100 deliveries represent an increase of 0.6 percent. The Four Rings sold more than in the previous year in all three core markets in 2017: In the United States, Audi achieved new record-breaking sales month by month and closed the year 2017 with growth of 7.8 percent. In China, Audi not only managed to offset the poor delivery figures from the first half of the year, but even achieved a cumulative increase of 1.1 percent in the year-end spurt. In Germany, sales built on the very high level in 2016 with an increase of 0.4 percent.

“Despite a very challenging situation we achieved positive growth in all core markets in 2017 and achieved a new record-breaking sales result worldwide. Every single market contributed to this outcome. This demonstrates the attractiveness of our product portfolio to our customers,” says Bram Schot, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG.

Since June, Audi has managed to return to growth in China, steadily reducing the cumulative year-on-year decline month by month and ultimately achieving a positive sales balance. In the period January through December, the brand increased its deliveries by 1.1 percent to 597,866 automobiles. With this new all-time high, the company continues to maintain its lead in the Chinese premium market. Following on from its similar achievement in November, China also posted the highest volume growth of any individual market in the last month of 2017. Here the sales figures once again increased sharply, up 34.3 percent to 69,160 automobiles year-on-year. Never before had so many Chinese customers taken delivery of an Audi in a single month.

Audi of America also achieved another successful year despite the declining overall market. Audi was the only premium manufacturer in the United States to grow steadily in 2017: up 7.8 percent to 226,511 units. In December 2017, the company also celebrated its 84th record-breaking month in a row (+16.3% to 26,977 units).

With high growth throughout the year, Audi Canada (+17.9% to 36,007 cars) also established itself as a firm fixture among the top ten largest markets.

Despite numerous political and economic uncertainties, sales in Europe rose 0.4 percent to around 860,600 cars. In addition to Germany (+0.4% to 294,544 cars), Italy (+10.5% to 68,954 cars) and France (+3.6% to 63,980) achieved new annual record-breaking figures. The market downturn in the UK had a negative impact on overall results: With 175,217 deliveries and a drop of 1.3 percent, total Audi sales in the United Kingdom, however, comfortably outperformed the declining overall market.

The global increase in demand for the Q models (+10.8% to around 689,150 cars) was a major factor in the growth of the Four Rings in 2017. More than one out of every three Audi models sold was therefore an SUV. The best-selling Q model in Europe is the Q2. Apart from Germany (23,167 units), other major buyers here included the UK (12,636 units) and Italy (11,068 units). Global sales of the Audi Q3 once again increased in December (+11.3% to around 20,950 cars). In 2017, the most successful member of the Q family was the Audi Q5 with around 281,850 automobiles delivered. The most Audi Q5 models were delivered to the individual market China. The successor model will go on sale at Chinese dealers as a long-wheelbase version in spring 2018. The Audi Q7 also saw sales increase by 3.9 percent in 2017. Since the start of the year, sales of the full-size SUV have increased in North America alone by about a fifth to around 43,800 units.
